There is no question asked that Rwanda offers a sheer variety of bird habitats. From mountains, grasslands, plains, vast swamps, to rivers, lakes and of course the rolling hills.
In total 703 different species of birds are known (as of November 2018).
Among the species are 20 Albertine Rift Endemics and many Lake Viktoria Basin Endemics, which any birder should be wishing to see.
The compact nature of Rwanda makes trips through the country relatively short, while giving access to many of the most special birds.
Regal Sunbird
Nyungwe Forest is a tropical montane Rainforest and everyone's dream to go for birdwatching, as it is home to 322 different species of birds and 29 Albertine Rift Endemics species including the Red-Collared Mountain babbler (Kupeornis rufocinctus).
Many species of other animals such as reptiles and butterflies can be seen here as well. Unique plant species will amaze botanical enthusiasts.
Whilst here do not miss the canopy and more adventurous trails Nyungwe National Park offers, which will also link you to more and various wildlife.
Akagera National Park is located in the north-east of Rwanda, outside the high rising Albertine belt. Like a mosaic, wetlands, lakes, savannah, grassland and more are beautifully strung together.
One of the most sought after species is the Red-faced Barbet and the rarest species - the Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex). But Akagera is also home to the endangered Papyrus Ganolek (Laniranius mufumbiri. It is easy to say that Akagera National Park is definitely the best place to spot the elusive Ring-necked Francolin.

The Volcanoes National Park in the North of Rwanda is part of the Virunga Mountain Range and includes five famous Volcanoes Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi. The Volcanoes National Park is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas.
Next to marvelling at the primates, it is a must for birders to catch a few of the 200 bird species living there. The Scarlet-Tufted Sunbird is a species which many passionate birders would love to spot in the the Virunga Mountains.
